HALVARD SOLNESS PDF

Plot[ edit ] Halvard Solness Shawn is an aging architect of a small town in Norway, who has managed to attain some distinction and local reputation; he has long been married to Aline Hagerty. One day while his friend Doctor Herdal Pine is visiting, Solness has another caller: year-old out-of-towner Hilde Wangel Joyce , whom the Doctor promptly recognizes from a recent trip. Soon after the Doctor leaves and Solness is alone with Hilde, she reminds him that they are not strangers; they previously met in her home 10 years ago when she was When Solness does not respond to her quickly enough, she reminds him that at one point he made advances to her, offered a romantic interlude, and promised her "castles in the sky" during their encounter, which she believed. He denies this, but she gradually convinces him that she can assist him with his household duties and he brings her into his home. During the construction of his most recent project, which includes towering steeples, Hilde learns that Solness suffers from acrophobia, a morbid fear of extreme heights, but nonetheless encourages him to climb the steeples to their very heights at the public opening of the newly-completed building.

Castles in the Sky 10 February Im glad I spent a bit more time looking into this play instead of just rushing out a review as I normally do because Ibsen certainly does deserve to be explored somewhat deeper than most other books and plays well, not quite, because plays, especially these days, seem to fall into the realm of art and literature.

Anyway, as you can probably guess from the title this play is about a master builder. Well, not so much in this piece since our master builder seems to have in part lived a charmed life.

Yet, he also seemed to have luck go his way as well, having pushed all competition out of his town so that not only is he a master builder, but he is the only builder. The thing is that this woman suddenly rocks up and claims that ten years previously he had visited their town, built a grandiose church, and promised this girl that in ten years he would give her a kingdom.

Well, this particular girl has decided that she will hold him to his word and claim that kingdom, though this does sort of seem to be something that he said on the fly to a little girl. Yeah, I guess the moral here is that one needs to be careful what they say to people, least they be held to it. However, what he did do was subdivide the land and sell off a number of dwellings for a substantial profit — so it seemed as if everything worked out well for himself. Yet it also seems as if he has moved away from building grandiose structures to simply building houses.

I guess the money is a lot better, as well as the demand. The other interesting thing is that he has some employees, and one of them really wants to take over the business, but of course our Master Builder has a reputation to uphold, and he is simply not going to just let anybody take over the business.

In fact, he ends up looking for an excuse to get rid of them.

Shakajora When he reaches the top, she insists that she sees someone up there struggling with him. In so many ways, Hilde is the opposite of Aline. It is a powerfully dramatic conclusion, but it is not in any sense a psychological one. Instead, the trio of Brovik, Ragnar, and Kaja turn out to be relatively unimportant in the play.

The Master Builder

Regardless, film revolves around the aging and perhaps dying architect Halvard Solness Wally Shawn , a parochially renowned architect whom we first see in a bed with EKG leads, monitors, and private nurses attending to his apparently imminent death. Hilde relates that she met Solness 10 years before at the age of 12 when he built a church and, for her, magically placed a wreathe at the top of the steeple. There are hints that Solness tried to seduce her at age 12, but also more obvious statements that she worships Solness as the "Master Builder" with whom she will re-unite in 10 years and who will build her a "castle in the sky. Before going to Spoilers and conjecture, it should be noted that Shawn, who is a Harvard graduate, learned Norwegian so he could translate the play directly into English himself. The acting is outstanding, especially from Shawn and Joyce who up until this film had relatively minor roles.
